How to choose an AI consultant: 8 questions to ask

Eight questions that separate AI consultants who deliver working systems from those who deliver slide decks, and the answers you should expect.

The right AI consultant will find where AI pays off in your business, build it, and stay accountable for whether it works. The wrong one leaves you with a strategy deck and no change. These eight questions help you tell the difference before you sign anything.

1. Do you start with our business or with a tool?

Good consultants start by understanding how you make money and where work piles up. Be wary of anyone who leads with a specific product before they understand your operations.

2. Do you build, or only advise?

Advice is useful, but most businesses need working systems. Ask whether the same team that recommends a solution can build it, test it and support it afterwards.

3. What does the first engagement cost, and what do we get?

You should get a clear price and a clear deliverable before work starts. For example, AIVolve’s AI audits start at $1,500 and end with a ranked opportunity register, a 90-day quick win and a 6–12 month roadmap.

4. How will you measure whether it worked?

Ask how success will be defined before the build: time saved, turnaround, error rates. A good answer names targets to test, not guaranteed results.

5. Who owns what you build?

You should. Systems, code and data should live in accounts you own, so you are never locked in if the relationship ends.

6. How do you handle our data?

Ask about confidentiality agreements, how much access they need and for how long, and how they handle regulated information such as patient, client or financial records. These should be planned during scoping, not after.

7. What credentials does the team have?

Ask who will actually do the work and what they are qualified in. Vendor programs can help here: AIVolve, for example, is Certified in the Claude Partner Network, and its team includes four Claude-certified developers.

8. What happens after launch?

AI systems need care as models, data and processes change. Ask what ongoing support looks like, how response times are agreed and how costs are reviewed. See Managed AI Services for one approach.

The short version

Choose a consultant who starts with your business, builds what they recommend, prices the first step clearly, measures results, leaves you owning everything and plans for data handling and support from day one.
